Today's article is about all the information related to academic degrees, how to apply for Turkish universities, and admission requirements.
First, let me highlight the types of academic degrees in Turkey:
- First: Turkish High school diploma in Turkey.
- Second: The mainstream governmental high school diploma we are all aware of; either you studied in your country or abroad at a school accredited by your country.
- Third: International certificates, such as IG, IB, and American Diploma, which are considered a stand-alone certificate just like the high school diploma.
- Fourth: Exams that are either local, such as YÖS, or international, such as SAT, ACT, and others. These exams alone are neither sufficient nor acknowledged as you students have to study 12 years of the different educational stages.
Let me briefly explain each exam:
- YÖS: It is an entrance examination designed for foreign students wishing to apply for public universities in Turkey. Each university conducts its own version of the exam. However, it is worth mentioning that a large number of public universities accept students without holding it. The exam consists of IQ and mathematical questions. Its duration ranges from 100 to 120 minutes depending on each university. Its fees start from 100 to 250 liras. Registration starts every March.
- SAT: SAT is an international exam held in English. It is a standardized exam used for university admissions in the USA. This exam is accepted in most world countries including, of course, Turkey. There are two types SAT 1 and 2 or SAT Subject tests. The first type is more important as it is the one required for university admissions. SAT is divided into several sections: Reading, writing and mathematics. SAT is out of 1600. It is repeated bi-monthly.
Let's move to the classification adopted by the Turkish universities.
- First, all the private universities do not have any requirement except for having a having obtained a high school diploma-- without any other exam.
Public Universities:
- The qualification required to apply for public universities will be presented to you in a downward order (from the highest qualifications to the least), especially if you are applying for a medical major, such as the faculties of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.
- 1- International diploma with YÖS or any other international exam, such as SAR with a high score.
- 2- Turkish diploma with YÖS or SAT.
- 3- Mainstream diploma with YÖS or SAT.
- 4- International diploma only.
- 5- Mainstream diploma only.
- Indeed, your score is the most important requirement.
- Being accepted in a medical school is guaranteed if you have one of the three first qualifications with a high score; nevertheless, it is almost impossible if you have one of the two last qualifications with a low score.
- Having a foreign language is an extra given the preparatory year offered by all universities to learn English or Turkish. Accordingly, universities focus on the student's excellent as he will definitely acquire the language with practice.
